Uppsala Circle

29 Oct 2025 In-person

Time: 17:30-20:00

Location: Confirmed via email upon registration

The focus of our book club is primarily on non-fiction, English is our lingua franca, and the sessions will involve debates that are moderated. Participation in a meeting only requires one commitment: reading the selected book in advance.

Our topic for the next session on 29th October will be The Captive Mind (1953) by Czesław Miłosz. We’ll explore how intellectuals respond to oppression, the seductions of ideology, and the moral compromises people made under the communist rule.

As a benefit, members of the group will have access to an electronic version of the book, available on the group's Facebook page. Please register there to access the books, regular announcements, the member list, and more.

Meetings are held regularly, every one to two months, and include discussions lasting two and half hours, followed by relaxed get-togethers over beers. Essentially, this book club marries academic rigor with an amicable social setting, allowing for both learning and the forging of new friendships. Our aim? To foster a community that extends beyond the boundaries of our meetings.

Tea and coffee will be served. We hope to see you there!
